Fructus Schisandrae, the fruit of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz), Baillon, or Wu-Wei-Zi, transliterally meaning “the fruit of five tastes” in Chinese, Indeed, its flavour is unique, including sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and spicy, is a commonly used tonic herb in traditional Chinese medicine, particularly for the treatment of liver ailments.

Active constituents:

The major constituents in schisandra are lignans (schizandrin, deoxyschizandrin, gomisins, and pregomisin) found in the seeds of the fruit. Modern Chinese research suggests these lignans have a protective effect on the liver and an immunomodulating effect. Two human trials completed in China (one double-blind and the other preliminary) have shown that schisandra may help people with chronic viral hepatitis. Schisandra lignans appear to protect the liver by activating the enzymes in liver cells that produce glutathione, an important antioxidant substance.

The extract contains a high content of unsaponifiables including rare dibenzo [a,c] cyclooctadiene of the gomisin and schizandrin types, beta sitosterol and essential oil, fatty oil with a high content of gamma linolenic acid.
